WOW Spotlight: Mackenzie Evans

Meet Mackenzie! Mackenzie is just finishing up with her sophomore year in molecular genetics, minoring in psychology and bioethics. She has been volunteering with WOW for two semesters, and was introduced to it through Choose Ohio First, and has been dedicated since! She chose to study molecular genetics with the goal to become a genetic counselor after she graduates. Genetic counselors are professionals that can help individuals understand their genetic conditions, risks, and what steps to take next for the best health outcome. Mackenzie explains how she would want to specialize in cancer (oncology) genetic counseling. Mackenzie was inspire to pursue this career in high school by her freshman biology teacher, and she so grateful that her teacher introduced her to this career path! After deciding to pursue genetics, Mackenzie focused on other aspects that play a large role in her future career, leading to the choosing of her minors. She explains how there are a lot of new discoveries in genetics and new ethical decisions are being made every day regarding what you can and can't do with gene editing, which connects to her choice in minoring in bioethics. Her minor in psychology connects towards the counseling side of her future career. She explains how it is so important to be able to deliver really hard news to individuals appropriately and being able to advise them through their next steps.
